  • Mike Huckabee launches presidential bid

Finally, somebody I can get behind! As of this moment, with not much else to choose from, Mike is my choice for our next President. Someone said he had heard 'things' about Mike, but was unable to provide any further information. Couldn't even remember what he had heard. Well, if anybody knows something I don't please feel free to enlighten me.

Frankly, McCain scares me. I kinda like Giuliani's style, but I don't think I want him running the country. Romney... I don't think so, Tim. He's already playing both ends against the middle. (And how many First Ladies can we have, anyway?) I have to admit, I'm not as 'up' on politics as I should be., I don't know enough yet about Brownback, Hunter or Tancredo to form an opinion. Maybe some of y'all who are more politically savvy can fillin the blanks.

    Meanwhile... have a JESUS-filled day! ^i^

  • Everything's Ducky

I know, I know. I've been way too scarce lately. I've been cleaning and culling and getting the house ready to show. A family came by yesterday afternoon and seemed very interested. Ours is the first house they've seen, though, so they naturally want to look at more before making a decision.

    I'm plumb tuckered out by now. I'll post more after I get about 48 hours' sleep. 8-}

Meanwhile, check out this amazing story that was in Saturday's Tallahassee Democrat. There's a small picture and a brief video with this BBC article.

    Duck survives bullets, fridge
Animal left for dead lifts head after 2 days
By Julian Pecquet DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER

Noni Beck, president and wildlife rehabilitator at Goose Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, has been handling wounded animals for years, but she was floored by the story of the wounded duck she was handed earlier this week.

The woman who dropped the ring-necked duck off for treatment told this story: After being shot in the wing and leg over the weekend, the bird was left in a hunter's refrigerator - only to raise its head when the hunter's wife opened the door Tuesday, Beck said.

The duck "had been in the fridge for two days," Beck said. "It's just kind of freaky."

The hunter did not answer a call for comment.

According to Laina Whipple, a receptionist at the Killearn Animal Hospital, the duck, a 1-pound, dark-brown female, was brought in Tuesday by the hunter's daughter.

The man's wife "was going to check on the refrigerator because it hadn't been working right," Whipple said, "and when she opened the door, it looked up at her. She freaked out and told the daughter to take it to the hospital right then and there."

Whipple said the hunter used the refrigerator as a holding place to keep game fresh before dressing it out and putting the meat in a freezer.

Staff at the hospital directed the young woman to Beck's sanctuary. Beck has been working with

David Hale, a veterinarian at Cross Creek Animal Clinic who has been treating the sanctuary's wounded wildlife for free for years, to try to save the bird.

Hale said the duck, which has a low metabolism, could have survived in a big enough refrigerator, especially if the door was opened and closed several times.

He said he could see how the hunter could have thought the duck was dead.

"This duck is very passive," Hale said. "It's not like trying to pick up a Muscovy at Lake Ella, where you put your life in your hands."

He gave the duck, which is battling an infection in its wing, a 75 percent chance of survival. But it probably won't be able to be released into the wild.

Hale said the refrigerator might have made the infection worse by lowering the duck's immune system.

"This shows how tough and adaptable wildlife are," he said. "This is an extremely tough duck with a lot of spirit to live."

  • I've been tagged . . . by Rob (SwordAndSacrifice)!!

Each tagged player in this game must post in their blog starting with 6 weird facts about them, as well you must state the rules clearly. You must then choose 6 people to tag and the cycle starts all over again. You must list all people you have tagged and link them to your post. Don't forget to leave them a little comment saying that they have been tagged (chosen) and tell them to read your post.

    My 6 weird things:

    1. When I say either, I pronounce it ee-thur but I think eye-thur

    2. A few years after my first husband died, I married another man with the same first name. And each DH shared one name with his father - one first, one middle.

    3.  Most of my 'dream cars' are strictly manuals. I can't drive a stick shift. The exception was a Corvair I once owned and loved.  Just can't do it.

    4.  I don't like coffee, but I WAY love its aroma. I also love to smell pastures.

    5.  I like martial arts movies. (The older ones, anyhow. I rarely watch movies anymore, except old 'classics'.) Now, I'm not a real girly girl, but this just doesn't fit the rest of my 'profile' at all.

    6.  I had a job, for 3 days, milking cows.

    I'm tagging:

    Gertie
    Sasserfrass

Brenda ( go ahead, take a little break 8-] )
    Tipgkos
    Gail
Maggi ( maybe we can drag her out of retirement here 8-} )

  • How great is our God!

I'm all jello inside! God has brought me to tears this morning. Tears of awe and joy and adoration.

Someone very near and dear to me had a problem. He had some very unpleasant business to take care of next week and was trying to figure a way to get out of it without doing the wrong thing. Well, we talked about it and had come up with a reasonable solution, but still kept praying that God would intervene, just to be 100% certain everything was going to be cool. This morning, he got news that the whole deal had been cancelled. Done deal. Nothing to do but fall to our knees and thank our precious Creator for caring so much for us, even in the things that, though huge obstacles to us, are trivial blips to Him.

I sat here, shaking and sobbing, just amazed at how He keeps loving us and taking care of us, no matter how unworthy we are of His concern. I just feel so humbled. Without Him, we truly are nothing. How can we NOT love Him back, with all our hearts and souls and minds?!

I hope y'all will join me today in praising the God who loves us so much that He sent a part of Himself down here to take on our pain and punishment so that we can go to Him as His beloved children, cleansed and sanctified, fit to be in His presence.

    Have a JESUS-filled day! ^i^

  • Pay attention, people!

Honestly, does anyone pay attention anymore?! I had a response to a craigslist ad - PTL! - from a person who lives about 30-35 miles away. Since I was planning to head that general direction sometime this week, anyhow, I agreed to meet this person at a shopping center. I specifically said I was driving a yellow Ford Ranger and would try to park at a particular end of the parking lot. I sat there for 65 minutes. Later that evening, I got an email from this person - I keep saying this person, coz I'm not entirely sure of the gender involved - who had stood at the opposite end of the parking lot for about 40 minutes. Now this person never gave me any clues as to what to look for, but I figgered, 'nobody can miss a yellow truck, right?' HA! So, we're trying again this afternoon, down here in my little burg, so I can't possibly be overlooked.

    Y'all have a JESUS-filled day! ^i^

  • Best laid plans...

I should know better than to make plans a day or more in advance. I got a late start this morning - nothing new there - coz I was up late watching The Pretender on Hallmark. They always cancel my favourite shows, so I was pretty tickled to get a chance to re-watch. Unfortunately, it comes on at 2AM. sleep

My first stop was the library, which was having another Free Book Extravaganza. Actually 'extravaganza' is vastly overstating the whole deal. They set up a row of tables covered with boxes of books and you take what you want, preferably leaving a donation at the door. I've been known to come home with a small (pickup) truckload, but I'm pretty sure I came out with only about 30 today.

We're only about 3 miles +/- from the lieberry, so I decided I should drop off the swag before heading down the road. About 30 seconds after pulling out of the parking lot, I noticed the truck was running a tad rough again, but chalked it up to wet weather. For about 3 seconds. Then the CHECK ENGINE light flashed me a few times before settling itself in for another round of NOW WHAT?! After a week of dreary, rainy, mucky, I was SO ready to get out in the sunshine. Yes, the sun was actually shining this morning in the Sunshine State.

The rain, of course, has now returned. Naturally. Duller and DS went up to the big city to get my truck checked out and to pick up some chairs for our kitchen table. Nice 'new' (to us) chairs... in the back of the pickup... in the rain.

Oh, and to top off this perfect day, Duller took the dawg to the vet this AM and came back with a $230 bill!

Count it all joy, count it all joy, count it all joy.....

    Y'all have a JESUS-filled day! ^i^

  • Snitched this from SwordAndSacrifice
    Welcome back, S&S!

Some of those 'horror' movies were seen with someone, else I would never have bothered. Most of the others were seen on TV - does that count? - sometimes just because I was in the room when someone else was watching. Some I cant remember whether I saw the whole movie even.  As for the Star Wars movies, I had to look them up to figure out which was which. I saw the first 2 or 3 when they first came out, but somewhere along the line, they switched all the numbers.  And how come Soylent Green wasn't included?

SUPPOSEDLY if you've seen over 85 movies, you have no life. Mark the ones you've seen. There are 239 movies on this list. Copy this list, go to your own xanga account, paste this as a note. Then, put x's next to the movies you've seen and add them up. Have fun!

  • Quote of the Day

    .
'You know you've read a good book
when you turn the last page
and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.'

    - Paul Sweeney

This is pretty much how I felt about the Mitford series, among others.
What book(s) have made y'all feel like that?
I'm looking for some great reads.

  • Happy New Year!

Well, reckon we all have to start getting used to writing 2007 on our checks now. Hope y'all all had a refreshing holiday weekend. Please pray for precious little Amber, who spent New Year's Eve in the ER, bless her heart.

DS and I drove about halfway across the state hoping to get a good start on this year's bird list. It was rainy most of the day, so birding wasn't as good as we'd hoped. But we had a great time and watched a gorgeous sunset on the way home.

We stopped at one of my favourite spots in Madison, Lake Frances, to add Wood Ducks to our lists. There have been quite a few there every time we've been. Up till now. Not a single WD was to be found. Also MIA was the female Mandarin. We first spotted the male Mandarin Duck about 3 years ago. Last year, we found him with a mate. This trip, he was hanging out with 3 Mallards and a gargantuan 'Malloid' (mallard hybrid). There were several Cormorants and Anhingas, 12 Pied-billed Grebes swimming and diving and 2 Great Egrets scouring the shoreline.

The late hour and bad weather didn't make for great photography, but I did manage to get a few nice shots of the Mandarin. Isn't he gorgeous?!

Here he is with his 'Malloid' buddy.
